I'm a writer. I write m/m erotica. Kind of dark stuff, even though in real life I like rainbows and puppies and kittens. Not all at once though. That would be overwhelming.

Back home and back to work!

Well, I’m back from GRL. Okay, I know everyone’s probably already finished talking about GRL since they all got home ages ago, but I only got home last week. If I had to fly halfway around the world to go to GRL, I was taking some extra time to see some of the US while I was at it.

I met some wonderful people at GRL, way too numerous to mention here. Seriously, I’m not mentioning names because I know that I’ll leave someone out. A special shout out has to go to JA Rock and Lori Toland, my roomies. And, of course, my favourite roomie - the professor. OMG, look at that face:

Coming Soon: Brandon Mills versus the V-Card

In exciting news, JA Rock and I have a release date forBrandon Mills versus the V-Card, the second in our Prescott College series. For those of you playing at home, the date is October 28!

Dinosaurs. Brandon and Alex love them.

I don’t know what it is with the Prescott books, but the timing is always terrible for me when it comes to promo. When Mark Cooper versus America came out, I was in hospital and, despite all my best intentions to get some work done while in there, I spent a lot more time being unconscious than I’d intended. Also being on drugs that made me very happy and floaty.

Brandon Mills is out the week after GRL, and I’ll be in San Francisco that week with my friend Kate, who I met a gazillion years on my first day of school at Goondiwindi State High. So, once again, the lion’s share of the blogging and stuff will be down to JA. But I will totally pay her back in chocolate. She knows I’m good for it.

But you can’t have a sequel without a three-quel, right? That’s a word now. So, from the kinkfest of Mark Cooper versus America, to the awkward sweetness of Brandon Mills versus the V-Card, to:

Ta da!

Liam McDermott versus Authority.

This is the working title for our third Prescott book. And yes, there will be kink. There will be a D/s relationship. And, for Liam McDermott, college will mean a very steep learning curve.

Bliss

Yay! Bliss is here! Well, it is if you've pre-ordered through Riptide. Otherwise it'll be here on the 18th!

They're always happy.
Rory James has worked hard all his life to become a citizen of the idyllic city-state of Beulah. Like every other kid born in the neighboring country of Tophet, he’s heard the stories: No crime or pollution. A house and food for everyone. It’s perfect, and Rory is finally getting a piece of it.
So is Tate Patterson. He’s from Tophet, too, but he’s not a legal immigrant; he snuck in as a thief. A city without crime seems like an easy score, until he crashes into Rory during a getaway and is arrested for assaulting a citizen. Instead of jail, Tate is enrolled in Beulah’s Rehabilitation through Restitution program. By living with and serving his victim for seven years, Tate will learn the human face of his crimes.
If it seems too good to be true, that’s because it is. Tate is fitted with a behavior-modifying chip that leaves him unable to disobey orders—any orders, no matter how dehumanizing. Worse, the chip prevents him from telling Rory, the one man in all of Beulah who might care about him, the truth: in a country without prisons, Tate is locked inside his own mind.

Flash Fiction Addiction is here!

Well, actually it's on Facebook.

JA Rock and I have stated a flash fiction group for anyone who is interested. We'll be posting a shared prompt at least every month, and hopefully get some fun and crazy-different responses. If you're into writing flash fiction, or just want a smile, come along and join in. You can find it here: Flash Fiction Addiction

Here's our first every picture prompt, and my story underneath. Enjoy!

Whoops

“Are you sure?” Peter growled, his canary yellow pants a million times sunnier than his current disposition.

“Dude, at least you got the hat.” Max said. “What the hell is up with this shirt? Do I tuck it in or not?”

“You’re just jealous because you couldn’t grow a moustache,” Alan said.

Max snorted. “Your moustaches are ridiculous.”

“Epic,” Alan muttered, smoothing out a crease on his high-fastening blue pants. “They’re epic.”

“All right,” the general said. “Settle down, please. Let’s not forget you’re scientists and you have a serious mission out there. I don’t need to remind you that time travel is inherently dangerous, and that’s without the risk of discovery. Good luck, and stay safe.”

Peter held up his hand. “Wait. I just want to double check. These clothes, really?”

The general glanced at the technician. She nodded rapidly. “We take our research very seriously!”

“Fine.” Peter sighed, and led the others into the module.

“Well,” said the general. “Back they go, all the way to 1973.” He blinked at the display. “What does B.C. mean?”

The technician shrugged. “No idea, sir.”

She turned the dial, and the module disappeared in a flash of light and smoke.

Keepin' the bastards honest. (Thanks to Cphe for that title!)

I am only posting information that is easily and publicly available.  Links are good as of the time of posting this.  All screen shots are my own.

Michael Alexander Beas

Let's start this one with his Goodreads profile, shall we?

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7744167.Michael_Alexander_Beas?from_search=true

As you can see, Mr. Beas is a Goodreads author as well as member.  Let's have a look at his reviewing stats.

As of 23 July 2014, he has 388 ratings, 351 reviews.  His average rating of 4.90 means he gives very, very few books less than a 5-star rating.

Michael Beas is the #97 top reviewer on Goodreads as of 23 July 2014 when this screenshot was made.

But as stated above, Mr. Beas is also an author.  Here is the Goodreads book page for his fantasy novel Strump:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20464137-strump

His book has 17 ratings, almost all 5-star for an average of 4.88.

The same holds true on Amazon.com.

http://www.amazon.com/Strump-Shadows-Michael-Alexander-Beas-ebook/dp/B00I9VBHPO/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406175366&sr=8-1&keywords=Strump

Of the 18 reviews on Amazon.com for Strump, 17 are 5-star, one is 4-star.

Michael Beas, using his own name, is also a reviewer on Amazon.com

He clearly states his location as Waxhaw, North Carolina, exactly as on the Goodreads profile.

Here is Michael Beas' review of The Galadima Conspiracy by Dan Abubakar, posted on Goodreads on 23 July 2014.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1004763811?book_show_action=false

And for good measure, here is Michael Beas' Amazon review of the same book, also posted on 23 July 2014:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Galadima-Conspiracy-Dan-Abubakar-ebook/product-reviews/B00IFBFG28/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending

Next stop, fiverr.com for the profile of book review seller "Strump."

http://www.fiverr.com/strump/write-a-verified-review-and-post-on-4-sites?context=adv.cat_5.subcat_111&context_type=rating&funnel=2014072404023190018657280

As you can see, the fiverr profile page incorporates the cover of the book Strump with the author's name clearly visible:  Michael Alexander Beas.

A close-up of the profile avatar is also revealing:

as is the actual profile text for "Strump":

"Strump" is an author.  He will only post 4- and 5-star reviews.

Now let's take a look at some of the testimonials posted to "Strump's" fiverr gigs:

Here's one from "9 days ago."

Here is Michael Beas' Goodreads review of Vito Veii's book

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/990908784?book_show_action=true&page=1

Here is the same book's listing on Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Human-Part-Two-Androids-Soul-ebook/dp/B00IICQEDO/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

And Michael Beas' review of that book on Amazon.com:

The Amazon.com review is also dated 14 July 2014.  Nine days ago.

The testimonial from "vitoveii" clearly states that he has utilized the services of "strump" as a provider of reviews.

Michael Beas review of Skies Like These by  Tess Hilmo, dated 22 July 2014

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1003482434?book_show_action=true&page=1

And the fiverr testimonial from "thilmo" with the cover of Skies Like These avatar

Again, all of this information is readily and easily available.  I've provided all the links.

Amazon versus Virginity

As some of you may know, JA Rock and I have been advised by our publisher to change the title of our Mark Cooper versus America sequel, which was called Brandon Mills versus Virginity. Because Amazon would refuse to list it with that title.

When I mentioned this on Goodreads, a few people pointed me towards this book:

Why is this book allowed to use the V-word, but we aren’t? I suspect that it’s all to do with the way this book is tagged. While this book, for all I know, might be full of sexy good times, it’s not listed as erotica or erotic romance, so it escapes the cull. Here’s how it’s categorised on Amazon:

Flash Fiction

Here's a flash fiction piece I wrote last year for one of the GR groups. The picture prompt, from what I remember, was a woman in really short skirt and really tall stilettos stalking down a set of steps towards a surprised-looking guy in a suit. I don't remember all the rules, but I know we had to get the word "candle" in there somewhere.

So here's what I wrote. I like to think it's proof that I don't always torture my characters.

Cynthia Montgomery.

She moved as sleekly as a cat, in those high heels, short skirt, and legs that went on for-fucking-ever. Slinking up the steps like she was looking to rub herself against the nearest tomcat. Who would be Dan, by the way.

Poor woman, because what she didn’t know was that all those hours of effort—of plumping and primping and waxing and buffing—were completely wasted on Dan. That slightly stunned look on his face? Not befuddled by lust. He just hadn’t expected to see what his boss had for breakfast.

Why isn't it tomorrow yet?

I hate the International Date Line.

Because while it's June 1 here for me, it's still May 31 in the US. So even thought Another Man's Treasure should be out NOW, there's still like another day to go.

Another Man's Treasure will be available in all ebook formats from Smashwords and Amazon, and in print from the Createspace store and Amazon. And for the first week only, the ebook will cost $3.99 instead of the regular $4.99 list price.

The preorder link for Smashwords is live, and the Amazon and Createspace links works for the paperback. As soon as the Kindle edition is up and ready, I'll add that link in as well. In the meantime, here's how you can win stuff!

I am so excited for this book!

I don't have attention deficit dis...oh! Look! A Bunny!

So, it turns out I'm quite easily distracted. If I'm not juggling at least 6 projects at once, I get bored. I like to jump from WIP to WIP to WIP until I get...wait for it...WIPLASH!

That joke was terrible. I apologise unreservedly.

*bows head and performs ritual of abject contrition*

Anyway, at the moment I'm working away on the sequel toDark Space, as well as my Samoan-Australian policeman story and, with J.A. Rock, a sequel to Mark Cooper versus America, and a bunch of other things from The List. And this was quite enough to keep me busy.

Which is why I will never know why I decided to look through my filing cabinet.

My filing cabinet is a mess. The rail things that the files hang off have been busted for years, so stuff is just shoved in there. Most of it is so old it's typewritten. Or, worse, written in the back school exercise books. My filing cabinet is basically a cross between a repository for every piece of fiction I've ever written (apart from the stuff that was justifiably destroyed), a nursery for young spiders, a gecko hatchery, and a dust bunny sanctuary.

Anyway, I opened it.

And it found the uncompleted fantasy epic that I began writing in high school. It was surprisingly obsessed with crows.

source

Also, it's everything you'd expect: cliche piled upon cliche, terrible world building, a meandering plot, and full of so many Mary Sue characters that I want to build a time machine, go back to when I was fifteen, and punch myself in the head.

Also, on the first page, instead of could have had, I wrote could of had.

As in, of all the things I could have had, I wish it had been basic grammatical knowledge.

So, it's terrible.

But it's not too terrible. Underneath all that terribleness, there's the germ of an interesting idea. And I'm quite excited, because I think I can do something with it. I need to make some extensive changes, but I can do that.

I'll start with the prince's love interest.

He's totally a boy now. :)

Teaser: The Dreams You Made in the Dirt

Are you a member of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group

If not, you absolutely should be, because the Love's Landscapes event is currently underway. That's where a bunch of people send in a bunch of prompts, and a whole other bunch of people write them. And then we all get to read them FOR FREE!

The story I wrote last year, Falling Away, can be found via my Free Reads page

This year, the story I wrote is called The Dreams You Made in the Dirt. And not only did I get ambitious and make my own cover for it, but I'm also going to release it as a freebie via Amazon after the Love's Landscapes event. And possibly Smashwords as well, if I can actually figure Smashwords out...

But here's a look at the cover.

And here are the opening sentences:

In that split second as he watched the glass in the windscreen fracture like a spider’s web, Cole knew one thing for certain: he was going to die. He’d survived a tour in a country where people tried to kill him on a daily basis, and now he was going to die in a car accident. How prosaic. How fucking absurd.

If you guys like hurt/comfort, first times, and a shitload of angst, I think you'll enjoy this one.

There's also a dog.

Of course.

I'm beginning to think I'm incapable of writing a book without one.

REBLOGGED from Karlynp & the Doggone World: What Anne Rice Deleted as "Gangster Bully" Comments

Reblogged from Karlynp & The Doggone World:

For those wondering what got deleted, here you go. Screen shots!

I haven't gone through all of the comments, and I assume more has been deleted, but you can get a real sense of what she considers "gangster bullies".   Even Jenny Trout! (WOW!)

Most of the comments deleted were opposing views about Stopthegrbullies.com (STGRB). Apparently, she simply doesn't care that they use anonymous names, bully authors and reviewers, and play all the dirty tricks she claims to want stopped.

Oddly, there are very few pro comments about STGRB. Why is that? The exception are a few people who have been active in the STGRB all along. So if she can't listen to reason, maybe she should listen to the silence. It speaks loudly. Her fans may support stopping cyber-bullying (as do all of us), but they don't appear to be fans of STGRB either.

And for some fun, do check out Smart Bitches, Trashy Books blog post:

Let the Great Experiment begin!

You've probably heard this one before.

So, J. A. Rock and I wrote this thing.

But it's a new thing. It's not the thing you're thinking of.

Basically, this is an experimental thing. And by that I mean that it's not a romance. It's MM, but it's not a romance. It may not end the way you expect it to it. But what the hell do I know about your expectations? Maybe it all goes down exactly the way you think it will.

Anyway, it's a little bit different, and to keep it that way we decided to self-publish it. So as soon as we figure out exactly how to go about that, we'll put this one out.

In the meantime, this is it:

Ilia Porter is Chechen mob boss Mikhail Kadyrov’s greatest treasure. After leaving home at eighteen to escape his verbally abusive father, beautiful, selfish Ilia has lived with Mikhail, proud of his ability to bring such a powerful man to his knees to worship. But when Ilia’s father, a police captain, kills Mikhail in a raid, Ilia’s world falls apart.

Entering to pick up the pieces is Mikhail’s younger brother, Nick—impulsive, power-hungry, and dangerous. When Nick tells Ilia he’s taking everything that belonged to Mikhail—including Ilia—Ilia is too lost in grief to fight. Nick takes Ilia prisoner in the apartment Ilia once shared with Mikhail and grooms him for a very important mission: to kill Ilia’s father and avenge Mikhail’s death.

Ilia wants no part in the plot, but being Nick’s ally is preferable to being Nick’s victim, so he begins to warp himself into the monster Nick wants him to be. Hope arrives when Nick takes another captive: Patrick, a shy massage therapist who’s stronger than he seems. Patrick and Ilia must join forces to escape Nick—and to keep each other whole as Nick does everything in his power to break them.

Anything Goes

I write romance.

There, I said it.

There are a lot of people who look down on romance – and on the people who read it and the people who write it – because there’s this weird idea still hanging on that not only is romance “genre fiction”, it’s somehow the lowest kind of genre fiction.

It’s kind of like those people who say sarcasm is the lowest form of humour. Not if you’re doing it right.

The fact that some people look down on romance doesn’t really bother me. Mostly I’m amused, because I think these people imagine that romance is still this:

Look out, Nurse Saxon! That amnesiac patient (I'm guessing) is actually a millionaire rake (I'm also guessing).

The above cover is a very outdated and narrow view of the genre. Because it can actually be this:

Or this:

Or this:

Or this:

Anything goes!

And that’s the most fun thing about this genre. I can write a spy story, or a funny story, or a horror story, or any story that I want, and as long as it’s still about people making a connection it still counts. You won’t find that kind of latitude in other genres.

And that’s why I love it. I love reading it, and I love writing it, and screw what anyone else thinks. We’re having fun over here.

Books. Babies. Not the same thing.

I don’t subscribe to that whole “my books are my babies” mantra that you see every now and then. I don’t have babies. Lucky, because I’d be in jail if I treated my babies how I treat my books. It’s my understanding that babies have to be fed and washed and clothed and, most importantly, that you can’t just abandon them if they begin to annoy you. So, no. Books and babies are very different things.

I do understand where this sentiment comes from, though. I really do. We work hard on our books. We create them. We are emotionally attached to them.

But they’re still not babies.

Because too often when an author pulls out the “But my book is like my baby!” thing, it's the first stop on the crazy train that is the Meltdown Express. Before you know it you're at "How dare you criticise me just because you're too stupid to understand my genius" Station.

As though likening a book to a baby is an excuse to have an overwrought reaction to an unfavourable review.

As though someone saying they don’t like your book is like someone harming your child.

Rubbish.

Why not talk to someone who’s had a child, and ask them if that child in any way compares to a book? Better yet, why not talk to someone who’s lost a child and find out what they think of that cutesy little book analogy?

Books are a lot of things. They can inspire you, and educate you, and they can take you to places you never thought you’d get to go. Books are wonderful, and they are more than the sum of their parts. They can be magical.

And yet… they’re still not babies.

Well, maybe this kind of baby:

I hatch them, I wish them well, and then I kick them the hell out of my nest.

Whatever happens to them out there, they’re tough enough to handle it, and so am I.

March is a big one!

This month I am the featured author over at Riptide! Hooray for me!

If you follow the link you can find out all about my newest releases and what's coming up from me at Riptide. You can also read an interview and find out why my study is full of garden implements, dog food, and outdoor furniture. I'm not lazy at all -- it's a safety issue. *whistles*
